How to Make Vape Juice A Beginners Guide

If you have been vaping for any length of time you have probably heard about advanced vapers building their own coils for RDAs and making their own vape juice (DIY). It is not hard to make once you know the basics. We will discuss some common ingredients and how to combine them. Read on to learn how to make vape juice like a pro.

For those vapers wanting to get into coil building and juice-making, this is the part of vaping where it becomes even more fun and you get to be a bit creative. There are literally hundreds of flavor combinations that you can experiment with to find your own signature flavors.

The Basics of E-Liquid Making:

There are four basic ingredients that go into making vape juice. These basic ingredients are:

  1. Nicotine Base
  2. Propylene Glycol (PG)
  3. Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
  4. Flavor Concentrate (Flavor Art, Lorann, Capella, Inawera)

The first ingredient is the most important if you plan to make a juice that has nicotine. The rest of the ingredients are used to dilute the nicotine to the appropriate level (meaning 8,  12, 18 or 24mg of nicotine per mil). Nicotine by itself is very strong and must be diluted.

There are additives you can add to it besides these to enhance the flavor such as sweetener, menthol crystals (if you like menthol), ethyl maltol ( a type of sweetener used in cotton candy flavoring), Koolada (a cooling solution in “icy” non-menthol flavors)  and Tobacco Absolute. These are all optional flavor additives and are not required for any recipe to make e-liquid.

In addition to the basic ingredients, you will also need:

  1. An e-juice calculator
  2. Small plastic or glass bottles with childproof caps
  3. Pipettes or eyedropper
  4. A syringe without a needle (the kind used for cough medicine)
  5. Box of plastic gloves (buy from the pharmacy)
  6. Scale (for mixing by weight) optional

These materials are needed for safe handling of nicotine solutions and for accurate measurements.

Warning:

***Nicotine in high concentrations can be fatal if swallowed, always keep bottles tightly capped and out of reach of children. Wear gloves when mixing e-liquids and thoroughly wash all utensils in hot soapy water when finished.

***Keep all mixing supplies out of reach of children, including bottles of DIY vape juice. While diluted, nicotine solutions are safe to vape for adults, they should never be left where a child could get them. Always put them up on a high shelf that only you or another adult can reach.

While you do have to take care when handling liquid nicotine, don’t let that scare you away from making vape juice. The nicotine base is diluted by the addition of PG & VG and the flavoring.  The danger is in handling the un-diluted nicotine.

Each of the basic ingredients listed above is food-grade quality and that is why they are safe to use in vape juice.

  • Vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol are found in food applications, skin care recipes and more. VG is used as an alternative sweetener in low carbohydrate foods because it metabolizes slower than sugar. It is thick and syrupy with a slightly sweet taste.
  • PG is a thinner liquid used in medicinal applications for inhaled medicines, injections and used topically in some ointments. For vaping, it is used as a flavor carrier.
  • Flavor concentrates are used for making candy, cake, cookies, and other bakery items. The names listed above are ones that we recommend because they are more concentrated than flavoring bought from the grocery store and are safe for use in vape juice.

Directions: How to Make Your Own E-Liquid/Vape Juice

There are several places online that sell mixing supplies and nicotine base. I would suggest going with a lower concentration of 48 or 36 mg until you gain a little more experience in mixing. This can be broken down and diluted to 24mg, 18mg or 12mg and lower easily. I wouldn’t suggest buying 100mg strength unless you are an experienced pro looking to make large batches for long-term storage. 100mg strength nicotine base is very dangerous and can be absorbed through the skin. You still need to be cautious with lower concentrations but they are easier to work with and once diluted, the risk is much less.

1. Assemble Your Supplies

The first step is to gather all of your ingredients and mixing supplies. I recommend mixing only small quantities at first until you get a little experience at doing it and so that you do not waste any of your ingredients by making more than you will use at one time.

2. Get an E-liquid Calculator

E-juice Me Up is a calculator developed by a fellow vaper and is pretty easy to use. Download it to your phone or computer.

Juice Calculator is another one you can download to PC.

DIY Simple Recipe Mixing Calculator is another one with various mixing solutions. You can mix single flavors or whole recipes. Some of the combinations are a little more for the advanced vaper, but it’s easy to use.

E-liquid Recipes.com is a calculator/recipe maker. It gives a list of recipes provided by forum users with an embedded calculator for making the recipe.

3. Get a Recipe

EcigExpress.com is a large site with a recipe cookbook with several recipes to try. Another great place to get recipes is from vaping forums that have a section for DIY liquids like ECF (E-Cigarette Forum.com). If you haven’t already, I would suggest joining the site (it’s free) and you will have a connection to a large group of experienced vapers that are very helpful and don’t mind answering questions from new vapers. You’ll learn a lot and be part of a vaping community that helps each other. There is a section for DIY liquids in general, recipes and more.

Here is a recipe page with links to more information on vaping and mixing for beginners.

If you are a visual learner like me, Youtube has a lot of e-liquid mixing tutorials that will show you how to create flavor profiles and mix simple flavors. It helps sometimes to see someone else doing it the first time to understand what is being used and how much, rather than just reading it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L18sa1DJJw&t=5s

You will get the amounts from your recipe but a basic method of mixing is to:

  1. Have your ingredients ready.
  2. Put on gloves and open nicotine base.
  3. Measure out the amount of nicotine needed (per the recipe) into a clean e-liquid bottle. (use a separate syringe for each liquid)
  4. Add the specified amount of Vegetable Glycerine (VG) to the bottle.
  5. Add the specified amount of Propylene Glycol (PG) to the bottle.
  6. Add your flavoring or flavors (between 5- 10% of total) to the bottle.
  7. Cap the bottle tightly and shake thoroughly.

4. Steeping Your E-liquid

When you purchase e-liquid from a merchant it is mixed that day and is partially steeped by the time you receive it. Steeping improves the flavor of your mix over time. It’s like aging wine or cheese, it lets the full flavor of the juice develop. You can mix and vape if you are out of e-juice or don’t want to wait to try your new creation but the flavor may be muted until it has time to sit.

5. Steeping Process

Once you have mixed your e-liquid there are two methods for steeping your juice.  One method is to place the bottle of e-juice is a dark place away from sunlight, like inside a cabinet or drawer and check it in a week. Fill a tank and vape it and see if you like the flavor. If it's not quite strong enough put it back in for another week and check it again. Every couple of days take the cap off and let it breathe a little. Your e-liquid will turn colors but that is normal. It will go from clear to a yellow or slightly yellow to tan color.

The second method of steeping is called a “water bath” and involves placing the bottle of newly-mixed e-liquid in a cup of hot water and allow it to sit for 1 - 2 hours (keep the water warm by microwaving the cup of water without the bottle in it). After an hour or two it should be a slight yellow and you can try it to see if it is right. If not, put it back in for another 2 hours. Some vapers create several bottles at a time and like to put them in a crockpot full of water (just to the neck of the bottle) to maintain the heat.

Know you know how to make vape juice. Give some recipes a try and get your feet wet. You will eventually learn to create your own recipes through trial and error and find little tips and tricks to simplify the process even more. You can learn a lot by joining the forums as the vapers there are always ready to help answer questions for new vapers wanting to learn to DIY. How to Use a Vape Pen

For someone just transitioning over to vaping, learning how to use a vape pen might seem a little confusing. But in reality, it is very easy and once you get the hang of it you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. There is a little difference in technique between smoking and vaping so we will go over a few steps and give tips to help make your first-time vaping successful.

Parts of a Vape Pen    Diagram of a Vape Pen

A vape pen comes with two separate parts - a clearomizer (small plastic tank) and a rechargeable battery (the long piece).

When you first get your vape starter kit you will see these two pieces along with a charging piece and USB cable to plug in for charging. The tank section is where your atomizer coil is and where you will put your e-liquid.  The long piece attaches to the tank and may have a power button if it is a manual battery, or no button if it is an automatic battery.

Assembling Your Vape Pen

Your battery will come partially charged from the manufacturer but will need to be fully charged before use. To assemble the device simply take both pieces and twist them together. Each section has threading that is compatible with other similar devices of this kind.

You’ll see terms that describe “510” threading, that is what this refers to.  All devices that are 510 will be compatible with each other. Different manufacturers such as Kangertech sometimes use a different type such as 808 and 901.  You’ll just need to be aware of what type of threading yours has when purchasing additional batteries or clearomizers for your vape pen. License to Vape reviews vape pens, batteries and clearomizers that you can use with all your vaping gear.

Filling Your Tank or Clearomizer

Before you vape always make sure your tank has enough e-liquid.  Most clearomizers and tanks for vape pens hold between 2 - 3 mils of e-liquid.

If yours has wicks you will need to keep enough liquid in the tank to keep them saturated.  If you do not see wicks in yours then you most likely have a bottom coil system where the atomizer attaches from the bottom and the wicks are to absorb the e-liquid in a bottom-feeding system. If you refill your tank when about half empty you should have no problems with dry hits.

To fill your tank twist open the top section (for tanks with a top cap) or remove the drip tip (for clearomizer) and placing the bottle tip in the opening, drip liquid down the side of the tank avoiding the center tube which is for airflow. When full replace the cap and you’re ready to vape.

Charging Your Vape Pen

Most battery types are either charged through the micro-USB charging port on the side or bottom of the device, but some may just come with a piece that screws onto the top threading of the battery and can be plugged into your laptop or PC for charging. Refer to your instruction manual if you’re not sure which one you have.

Vaping Technique

Here is where the difference in smoking and vaping techniques come in. When you smoke, you take short pulls from the cigarette directly into your lungs and then exhale the vaper.

With vaping, you take long, slow pulls from the mouthpiece and draw the vapor into your mouth first and then into your lungs and exhaling the vapor. It may take a little getting used to at first so be prepared for that. If you don’t see much vapor the first few times, just keep practicing the technique and you’ll get more vapor as you get used to using the vape pen.

Steps to Using the Vape Pen

  1. Make sure the battery is fully charged
  2. Have the tank full of e-liquid
  3. Put the mouthpiece (drip tip) up to your mouth and press the power button (if it has one) at the same time. Take a long draw, pulling the vapor into your mouth (similar to the way you sip from a straw). Exhale the vapor slowly.

The reason everything is done in a slow fashion is that with cigarettes, the nicotine is absorbed through the lungs when you inhale. With vaping, the nicotine is absorbed through the mouth and mucous membranes so you will get more satisfaction from holding the vapor for a moment before exhaling through the mouth or nose.

Now you know how to use a vape pen and you should feel pretty confident when it comes to charging and filling with e-liquid. If you have any problems just refer back to the steps above until it becomes second nature. Very few people get it right the first time, so don’t feel bad if you don’t. Keep trying and give yourself more time to practice until you feel more comfortable, you'll be glad you stuck with it and so will others. Mutation X V5 RDA Review

There have been several versions of the Mutation X by Indulgence. Five to be exact and many seem to think that this one is the best one so far. Why? What is different about this version than the other four? Well, this version has some new options not offered in the previous versions.

Mutation X V5 Testing and Performance

I have spent a few days with this Mutation X V5 and I have to say that it has really surprised me. I took one look at it out of the box and wasn’t all that sure about whether or not I would like it, let alone use it.

It seemed really huge sitting on top of my VooPoo Resin. It is 34mm tall so it sits up pretty high and dwarfs most smaller mods. I eventually ended up using it on my Reuleaux 200W because it is a good size mod and it doesn’t look too bad on there. It works a little better for the size.

Build Quality and Design

The build quality is solid 304 stainless steel construction. All the pieces are smooth and have no blemishes at all. The “Mutation X” logo is etched on the front of the barrel section and it looks good. The airflow control on this one is very similar (to me) to the Wotofo Lush.

You have 9 air holes on each side and the top cap has a cut-out or jigsaw design so that when you put it in place and turn, you can open just three holes on the bottom (horizontal) and if you keep turning you close off the bottom and open three on the side going up (vertical). I guess you could call it “multi-directional” airflow.

There is also a little slot at the top which pulls air down into the build deck to create more vapor by going underneath the coils. I don’t know if that really works that way but I think that was the intention.

Build Deck

The build deck is where this RDA differs from the others. When you remove the top cap and barrel, you will see a postless design deck. This is what got my attention, as I had never seen a postless build deck before. I had heard about them but never thought about trying to build on one.

Turns out it wasn’t as hard as I had imagined. And you also have the option of adding the velocity-style posts to the deck if you want to use it that way. Although it doesn’t look like it, you can actually fit some pretty big coils in there.

Well Capacity

The well in this one is very shallow. I am used to deeper wells so I don’t have to drip as often. You just need the wicks to touch the deck because there really isn’t much to tuck. I did find that I was dripping more often to keep my cotton wet than with an RDA with a deeper well. I didn’t get any dry hits so it’s not really a con.

Durability/Reliability

It is very durable and sturdy. The barrel slides onto the deck very smoothly. There are no threads on this piece and the O-rings around the base keep it snug without scraping. There is also an O-ring built into the top cap for the drip tip. Keeps it snug but it is easy to remove and replace for dripping.

Ease of Use

I would say that this is easy to use for vapers in the “intermediate to advanced” category. The multi-purpose build deck may be a little intimidating to new builders and I wouldn’t recommend it in that case. But for those experienced builders, you’ll love this design.

Vaping Experience

Vaping on this RDA is really nice. I got good flavor and tons of vapor from just a single coil. I haven’t tried out the posts for dual coil yet because I have other similar RDAs with that post design and I was curious to try the one without posts after I got used to the idea.

Leaking

There really isn’t any leaking with this RDA because the airflow holes are so high up. As long as you don’t saturate your wicks too much you shouldn’t have any problems with leaking.

Cloud

Clouds upon clouds for days. It is really easy to fog up a room with this, even in single coil mode. You would probably get even more with a dual coil build and the airflow wide open. I like to close mine down to just a few holes because the whole 9 holes are too much air for me.

Flavor

The flavor produced by the coils is good. You can taste the flavor of the juice and it is true to the profile. Mine is wicked with just regular Japanese cotton pads but you may get better flavor from other wicking materials or wicking techniques.

What We Liked

+ Included 510 drip tip adapter
+ The unique build deck options
+ Post holes are large to fit thick wires

What We Didn't

- Too much airflow (too many holes for me)
- The top vertical airflow, the “cyclonic” thing, did nothing for me

Value

When this RDA first came out it was priced at $60. Since it has been out for a while that cost has come down quite a bit. You can find the Mutation X V5 for around $25 - $30 through most online retailers. It is a good value for the money and a nice RDA to have in your collection. You can check out all the License to Vape tank reviews here.

Final Verdict

The price points for this RDA are good, it works great and produces huge plumes of vapor. The flavor wasn’t really “over the top” but the flavor is subjective anyway. If you want a nice RDA with 2 build options and don’t mind that it is on the big side, then I recommend you get one. This would be a great RDA for advanced vapers and season coil building pros.

Is Vaping Bad for You?

If you are thinking about switching to vaping as a way of quitting cigarettes, you are probably wondering about the safety of using a vapor device due to some negative posts on media sites.

Everyone, especially the new vapers, asks “is vaping bad for you?” and “is vaping bad for your lungs?” Well, we're going to answer these questions here to end some of the misconceptions about vaping being as bad as smoking. To answer these questions, we’ll look at the effects of smoking and vaping together.

How Does Smoking Affect the Heart, Lungs, and Blood Pressure?

It is already well known that smoking cigarettes contributes to lung cancer, heart disease, and a host of other respiratory conditions. Your lungs have tiny, hair-like receptors called cilia which help clean the lungs and keep germs out. When you smoke, you damage the cilia, rendering them lifeless and unable to do the job. The result is an increase in mucus production (phlegm), frequent infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), shortness of breath (pulmonary hypertension), and smoker’s cough.

The reason smokers develop conditions like COPD, (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) emphysema and shortness of breath are because when you inhale smoke, even though you exhale it, small amounts of smoke and matter from the cigarette deposit into the lungs.

Smoke is heavier than air or vapor so some of it stays in the lower half of the lungs and attaches to the tissue. This, combined with reduced lung function (from long-term smoking), leads to infections and that feeling of not be able to take a full breath (shortness of breath, or breathlessness).

Blood pressure and heart rate increases and stays at an elevated rate for approximately 15 minutes after smoking a cigarette. So, it is safe to say that a person who is a heavy smoker may also have an increased risk of high blood pressure now and in the future.

Note: Blood pressure and heart rate are back to normal levels within 2 hours of the last cigarette smoked. This process goes on all day long depending on how much the individual smokes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4oFQ3w3Znk

Does Vaping Affect the Heart, Lungs and Blood Pressure?

  1. There is no change in blood pressure before or after vaping.
  2. Vaping does not increase heart rate.
  3. There is no change in lung function from vaping. In fact, many vapers report that they breathe better since quitting cigarettes and starting vaping.

Studies done since 2015 on the effects of vaping only make the headlines if they have something negative to say.

One prominent cardiac surgeon, Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Greece, has published several papers on how the effects of vaping are minimal compared to smoking cigarettes.

This segment from Vape Team Media highlights a study performed by Dr. Farsalinos and Dr. Giorgio Romagna in 2013 on the effects of vapor on myocardial (heart) cells. Please watch all the way through as they show the process of their evaluation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clGmu7jeSuY

Dr. Riccardo Polosa, researcher and director of the Institute for Internal Medicine & Clinical Immunology at the University of Catania, Italy was interviewed for a segment on Regulatorwatch.com. He has performed studies on vapers who have never smoked (to eliminate errors in results from prior smoking habits) and very clearly states that his results indicated no harm to the heart or lungs from vaping. His interview can be seen here, please watch all the way to the end for his statements.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hcp6EEC4TM

While we cannot say that vaping is 100% safe, we can say that vaping produces fewer chemicals than traditional cigarettes and test results show no effect on the heart, lungs, and blood pressure, unlike smoking cigarettes.

Aside from exploding batteries, vaping has never been shown to be the cause of health problems or death. No one has ever died from vaping, but people die every day from conditions caused by smoking.

So the answer to the question, “Is vaping bad for you?” (is it bad for your lungs?) is no. There is no scientific evidence to show that it is harmful to the lungs.

The reports in the media generate fear to deter people away from vaping because smoking and tobacco generate revenue. If people quit smoking, then states lose money and government loses financial backing.

An interesting point made by Dr. Polosa in the interview above, is that if his study had shown any evidence of harm to the heart or lungs he would be famous. Why? Because negativity and scare tactics make headlines. If he would have found any negative evidence, the media would have been all over it like it is with everything vaping-related. But since he found nothing harmful in vaping, hardly anyone noticed. License to Vape provides you some of the best information and tips on vaping to help you make the switch from smoking to vaping.

Anti-vaping proponents profess concerned over what harm e-cigarettes could pose to the public in the future. What is more harmful to the public is all the negative and misleading information posted on the Internet about e-cigarettes every day. Let’s continue the fight to get the truth out there. Support vaping and the vaping community.

What is Vapers Tongue and Top Ways to Avoid This

With all the stories going around in the media, vaper’s tongue sounds like some gross disease you get from vaping. Well, sorry to tell you it’s not. It is actually a very common occurrence that happens from time to time and is temporary. It can be lessened and prevented pretty much by following a few simple steps.

What is Vaper’s Tongue?

Vaper’s tongue refers to the inability to taste flavors in your e-liquid. Your favorite flavor suddenly tastes muted or has no flavor at all. Your tongue has anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 taste buds covering the surface. These taste buds are like skin cells they age, die off and regrow. That is why this is a temporary condition because it stops when the taste buds regrow.

What Causes This to Happen?

This condition is really caused by your olfactory senses (taste and smell) but different things may contribute to it. Dehydration, smoking, dry mouth, illness, and blocked sinuses can contribute to it.

Smell is connected to our ability to distinguish flavors and tastes. The taste buds are designed to detect flavors that are salty, sweet, bitter, and sour and if the nose is blocked due to a cold or congestion, those flavors will be muted.

Sometimes the culprit is just vaping the same flavor for too long. We find a flavor we like and buy a great big bottle of it. Then we’re stuck with that flavor for a month or longer and it just gets “tired” or “overused” to the point that it is not appealing anymore.

Do you remember when you were a kid and ate so much of your favorite food that you got sick of it and after that didn’t even like the taste anymore? Vaping the same juice for long periods can do the same thing.

What Can You Do About it?

There are a few remedies that have been known to work. Sometimes what is needed is a change of pace. Certain flavors are introduced in foods to wake up or cleanse the palate, they are usually citrusy or bright flavors totally different than the other flavors on the plate.

  1. So to apply the same principle to vaping, change what you vape.  Try vaping an unflavored juice or something completely different than you normally do.
  2. You can also take a vape break (stop vaping for a day or two) to give your taste buds a break.
  3. Alternately, you could switch the ratio of PG/VG in your vape juice. PG is thin and can be a little drying. Switch to a heavier VG-based liquid like 50/50 or 60VG/40PG.
  4. It also helps too drinks plenty of fluids and stay hydrated.

How to Prevent It in the Future?

It can be hard to prevent it from happening completely, but diligence to follow these suggestions will go a long way towards avoiding it in the future.

  • Drink Plenty of Liquids - coffee, tea, water, sports drinks, and etc.
  • Switch your flavors often - don’t vape the same flavor longer than two weeks at a time.  Have two or three flavors on rotation to avoid burnout.
  • Steep your liquids for a week or more after receiving them - steeping deepens the flavor making them richer, especially tobacco and dessert flavors.
  • Brush your teeth ( and tongue) and use mouthwash 2x per day - Biotene is one recommended for refreshing a dry mouth.
  • Eat citrus fruit - lemon, orange, lime, and grapefruit
  • And the last suggestion is to periodically smell strong, earthy scents like freshly roasted coffee, vanilla beans, and even some of your grandfather’s pipe tobacco. Smelling things like this work to reset or refresh the senses giving them a little nudge.

Remember, this condition is temporary.  So if you have it, don’t worry as it doesn’t last long. Just use the suggestions outlined above for coping with it until your taste buds have regrown, or your sense of smell and taste return. Check out all our guides here.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Vape?

Vaping and electronic cigarettes has been gaining popularity as an alternative to burning tobacco leaves and combustion. Vapers who were former smokers say they like the fact that they do not smell like ashtrays and they no longer need to go outside to smoke. But a big question to some who may not be familiar with the laws regarding e-cigarette usage is, “How old do you have to be to vape?”

This is where you will need to know your state laws regarding smoking and tobacco use. Most states follow the same guidelines with e-cigs as tobacco cigarettes.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Vape: The Legal Vaping Age in All States

The FDA has mandated that it is illegal to sell vapor products to those under the age of 18 in most states. Some states have tried adopting the T21 Initiative which would push the legal smoking and vaping age to 21.

In 42 states, the legal smoking age is 18. In 3 states it is 19, and the remaining 5 states, they have raised it to 21. Check out the vaping state laws to determine the age for your state.

But E-cigarettes Aren’t Tobacco

No, technically they are not. But since nicotine is derived (sourced) from tobacco leaves, the FDA has categorized it as a “tobacco product” even though nicotine comes from a variety of sources other than tobacco.

What is the Reason Behind the FDA Regulations?

Despite how vapers feel about the benefits of vaping as an alternative to cigarettes, there are some people who think vaping is as bad as smoking because it contains nicotine and because of some concerns about the long-term effects of vaping 20 or 30 years from now.  Studies have been done on this but the positive reports about vaping don’t seem to make national headlines, only stories of exploding vapes and teenagers buying vapor products from shops that did not check their ID.

Vaping RegulationsBecause of these negative reports and a bunch of misinformation published on the Internet, the FDA regulations came from anti-vaping proponents pushing for stricter laws regulating who can buy them and how much nicotine can be in e-liquid. The current regulations have been delayed until 2022 that requires all new vapor products to go through an application process and extensive testing for every new product to be released. This will be expensive and a lot of smaller manufacturers may not be able to keep up financially with the new demands.

One Reason We Agree with the 18+ Ruling

Vapor products were intended for adults with the ability to understand Ohm’s law and battery usage. Many vapor devices have the ability to put out 220W of power or more and should never be used by kids or teens. Even if you are the parent of a child who smokes cigarettes it may be tempting to just let them use it as long as they’re not smoking. Be advised, it is illegal for anyone under 18 (in most states) to buy or use vapor products.

What About Nicotine-Free E-liquid

Whether an e-liquid has nicotine or not is the law still applies. It applies to all vapor products including e-liquids, vape gear, and accessories. The law doesn’t stipulate “e-liquids containing nicotine only”, it applies to all vapor products as well as tobacco.

The best thing to do is to find out the laws as they pertain to your state. It’s better to know the regulations and abide by them than do something you may regret later because you didn’t take the time to find out. Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?

Does your vape taste different than it used to? If you get a burnt flavor when you inhale on your vape you have either a burnt coil or burned your juice with too much heat. If you find yourself asking, “Why does my vape taste burnt?” the answer may be in one of the reasons listed below. Here are a few reasons why this happens and how you can avoid it in the future. Also make sure you check out our entire beginner vape guide to get expert and pro tips on vaping.

Some reasons why you may get a burnt flavor or dry hit:

  • You didn’t prime the coil before vaping
  • Your heat was too high
  • Your juice is too thick for your atomizer
  • Your coil is too old
  • You have a hot spot (in DIY coils)

What is a Coil Head Made Of?

Coil heads (or atomizer heads) are comprised of a coil with cotton wicking wrapped around it encased in a metal cylinder. The cylinder has feed slots for the juice to wick in through but often times it doesn’t get (a) enough time for the juice to saturate the coil, or (b) the heat may be set too high for the resistance of the coil. If the coil doesn’t get enough juice to wet it properly it can burn from being too dry, and if there is too much heat it can also burn ruining the cotton wicking leaving a bad flavor (from burnt cotton) that stays until you change the coil.

The remedy for a burnt coil is to change out the coil head. Once the cotton is burnt there is no fixing it. For RDAs and rebuildables, just replace your cotton wicking.

Here are a few tips for avoiding dry hits and burnt coils in the future:

The first thing to remember is always when using a new coil, prime it before vaping. It only takes a few minutes to drip a couple of drops of e-liquid in the center of the coil (where the cotton is) and onto the feed slots. After installing the coil and filling your tank with e-liquid, let it sit for roughly 5 minutes to allow the cotton to wick properly.

When it comes to wattage, higher ohms need lower wattage and vice versa. A tank or clearomizer that uses a standard 2.2 or 2.4 atomizer head uses a lower heat setting (between 10 - 30 watts) than low resistance coils. These coils are easy to burn so start off at the lowest setting for your device and work up until you get flavor and vapor with no burning.

Higher resistance coils, or tanks with a top wicking system may not be able to use higher VG juices. Liquids high in VG are thicker and may clog up your atomizer. You can opt for a lower VG e-liquid like a 50/50 blend or switch to a tank with a bottom coil feed.

If you get a weird flavor from a tank you use frequently it may just be that your coil is old and the juice in your tank has absorbed the flavor from it. Old coils get gunky over time and need to be changed. How often to change them will depend on your device and the wattage settings you use. If you use a lower heat (30 - 50W) and vape daily a coil should last you between 4 - 6 weeks. Most retailers say between 2 - 4 weeks, but you can make a coil last longer if you are careful. This is just an estimate though, your actual usage may be different.

Another reason for getting a burnt taste, especially in RDAs, is when you have a hot spot. A hot spot is when one coil isn’t glowing at the same rate as the other. When building coils for RDAs you want both coils to glow at exactly the same time as the other when you press the fire button. If one isn’t glowing the same as the other it is not generating enough heat to vaporize the juice and it will burn, even though your wicks are completely saturated. A good way to tell if this is the problem is to remove your wicks and look at the center of the cotton. If it's dry or burnt in the center, you have a hotspot.

Press the fire button and glow your coils while the cotton is out of them and see how they look. If one isn’t glowing the same as the other you may need to strum it a little with a small tool or edge of the tweezers. Check again and repeat until both coils are glowing the same.

For RDAs another common reason for burnt flavor is using too much cotton. Your wicks should be just thick enough to slide through the center of the coil with just a hint of resistance. If the cotton gets stuck or you have to wedge it in, you’re using too much. Getting just the right thickness in wicking takes practice.

Don’t be afraid to pull it out and start over if you think you have too much. Likewise, if your wicks are too long or you find yourself stuffing them into your juice well, you probably need to trim them shorter. Too much cotton can cause inefficient wicking, which in turn, leads to burnt or dry hits. Check out all the License to Vape guides and expert vaping advice.

Davinci IQ Dry Herb Vaporizer Review

Vaporizers have come a long way since the early days. From the first desktop models, to the smaller portable units, these devices pack a lot of power into smaller packages with technology that uses conduction heating and the ability to customize your heat settings via phone app. The Davinci IQ is a dry herb vaporizer that utilizes a “smart path” technology combined with a ceramic heating chamber to create some of the best vapor production I’ve had from a vaporizer of its kind.

Davinci IQ Testing and Performance

I was so excited when this finally arrived in the mail. I heard about this vaporizer from friends and couldn’t wait to try it out. It is the first of its kind with smartpath technology. I installed the app on my phone and connected it by Bluetooth, set my heat settings and waited while the unit heated up. When it reaches the desired setting it vibrates (and beeps) to let you know it is ready to use.

I tested and reviewed this device for a period of two weeks and found it to be easy to use and very enjoyable. I’m not a person who likes to fiddle with menu settings and some of it is a little confusing to me.

Eventually I just chose to use the second smart path and just left it there. You can choose between “smart path, precision, and boost” modes. Precision chooses a set temperature, while the smart path modes let you set your heat to a range that increases slowly as you vape.

Choosing the range of heat deepens the flavor of your vapor as the oils in the dry herb are vaporized more slowly and evenly producing a very satisfying vape.

Boost mode is great for when you don’t have the time to do a full session, but you just want a couple of good strong hits at maximum heat. Press and hold the power button down to enter boost mode. It keeps the device at the maximum temperature as long as you keep pressing the button. When finished release the button and it will return to the previous settings.

Build Quality and Design

I very much like the design of this unit. It is small and fits in the hand well with a very comfortable grip. I have the “Gunmetal” version and prefer to use the extended mouthpiece with it. The quality is very good and it is sturdy. All of the pieces and parts to it are of a high-quality and it works just like it says.

Discreetness

If you did not use the longer mouthpiece you could completely conceal the unit in your hand for discreteness. If you wanted something to vape on the go, this will work perfectly. You could very easily stealth vape and have no one even notice.

Durability

The device is very solid and well-made. Nothing rattles and all the parts work like they should. When I opened the box and was setting the device up the first time, I accidently dropped the little metal piece that goes on the top of the aroma chamber down inside of the opening for the chamber itself. The little piece had turned sideways as it went in and it took me a while to get it out. I thought for sure that I would end up ruining the device trying to get it out but eventually it did come out and with only a few minor scratches.

Power

The 3500mah 18650 Li ion battery lasts about 90 minutes of continuous vaping. It takes 2 - 3 hours to fully charge, depending on how much was left in the battery from your last session. You can also use it while charging (pass-through).

Vaping Experience

I have to say that it took me a few tries to get it working right. It wasn’t the device, it was me (user error). As with all devices, sometimes you need to read through the instructions a few times to get a better understanding of the menu system. Also, I had to get used to using a MTL draw again to get the proper amount of vapor production. I think I was just pulling to hard, when I went back to a “sipping” motion I was able to get more vapor.

Some vapers have reported that the device gets really hot, but for me, I find that it gets warm enough that you can tell its working. I have had no instances where it was too hot to hold in my hand, even on the highest heat setting. The zirconia used for the mouthpieces also keep heat away from your lips. It stays nice and cool.

What We Liked

+ Easy to clean
+ Good flavor
+ Heats up quickly
+ Great vapor production
+ LED grid display
+ The ceramic oven, aroma chamber, and pearl
+ Ground material is completely vaporized

What We Didn't

- Confusing menu system, bit of a learning curve to using at first

Value

This vaporizer is priced at $279.99, which is a really good price for what it does. The Smartpath technology, the Bluetooth App, ceramic oven, zirconia mouthpiece and flavor chamber are all selling points for this device. The technology for this device and how it does what it does, makes it well worth the asking price. It’s easy to use and easy to clean, unlike some similar devices for much less.

Final Verdict:

While it did take a bit of practice for me to get the settings down, I find that the way I like to use this device is just to set it and forget it. If you like to customize things then play around with the settings until you get it the way you like. I would recommend this device to any vaper looking for a high-quality dry herb device that is easy to use and requires little upkeep.
